Nice work, music fits too! :)
Is the wood procedural?
Which GPU are you burning up for your Cycles renders? :D

In this project that's just illusion, but what you are asking for can be done with either drivers or transformation constraints.
[link] Here is a good tutorial on how to link gears togather using constraights.
How to make them move up or down depending on their rotation can be done using transformationconstraints but I cannot find a tutorial on that this quickly, I suggest Google :)
You cna also animate it manually. example: A gear has 24 teeth and rotates 360 degrees in 4 seconds (96 frames). the gear is connected to a teethed-up box with also 24 teeth. you can animtate the box correectly by inserting a keyfrome on the Z-loc on frame 1. move to frame 96, Grap the box and move it up along the Z-Axis 24 teeth and insert a keyframe on the Z-Axis. they should mvoe in sync this way.
Hope this helps but gtg to school!

Are you thinking of going far beyond that on this Game of Thrones trubute ? I mean, making other castles and more animation, just like in the series overture ?
At least, I suggest you try some different lighting, something like a night light, torch light mood, I don't know, a light that increase the medieval atmosphere but still allow us to enjoy the excellent animation of wheels and towers moving.

Thanks for the comment and critique :) I'm not thinking of going far beyond what it is now though, since my time is very limited at the moment and I plan on finishing it before the last episode hits the air. firt priority is getting the landscape all up and running and than getting the materials and lighting (as you mentioned it needs some work and experimenting) right. we'll see how much time I got left after that :) Cheers!

ok!
There is going to be episodes for years, so you might have a lot of time!
When you complete it, I suggest you send the link of the video and a good quality render to the official pages and social networks of the series. They love fan art. Your work is really cool, especially with the excellent song on the video, and it could make a very nice buzz, I'm quite confident about that.
